A 37-year-old man remains on the run after allegedly assaulting a taxi driver with a hammer in a brazen attack in Heidelberg.

A taxi driver has been viciously assaulted in broad daylight by a hammer-wielding thug in the northeastern suburbs.
The 37-year-old victim was assaulted by his male passenger while travelling along Liberty Parade in Heidelberg at 1.45pm.
“The male got out of the taxi and smashed the windscreen with a hammer before opening the driver’s door and continued to assault the driver,” a police spokesman said.
The offender fled on foot and was last seen on Marobe Street, near the Darebin Creek Forest Park.

It is unknown what provoked the attack.
The victim was taken to hospital for medical treatment.
