Warning: Distressing content about sex abuse of children.

A vile monster who preyed on 47 children across four countries, filming them performing sex acts and telling them to smile as they winced in pain, has been dubbed Australia’s worst paedophile.

Supreme Court judge John Champion today jailed Melbourne father Boris Kunsevitsky for 35 years, describing his abuse of young boys as “harrowing”and “despicable”.

Justice Champion said the former paediatric nurse had an “insatiable” appetite for sexual offending.

“It was breathtaking in its scale. It represents the worst level of this offending I have seen and is indeed shocking,” Justice Champion said.

Justice Champion said the 35,344 pictures and 4810 videos – found on Kunsevitsky’s hard drives under folders including “Jailbait” and his victim’s names – were “difficult to look at”.

It was “particularly horrifying”, he said, Kunsevitsky could be heard in some of the recordings asking the boys to smile while he raped them.

“In one video you can be seen looking at the camera and smiling,” Justice Champion said.

Kunsevitsky, 53, pleaded guilty to 59 sexual offences against children over a 15-year period from 2002 to 2017 in Australia, Singapore, Indonesia and the Philippines.

His victims were aged from 10 to 16.

Among the youngest was a 12-year-old boy in Melbourne, who he had met in an online chatroom and abused over two years.

On one occasion, Kunsevitsky picked the boy up from his home and took him to his wife’s parent’s home where he set up a tripod to film sexual acts with him.

His offending only came to light after German authorities contacted Australian Federal Police in 2008 after discovering videos of the Australian boy online.

The victim was not identified until 2016.

Kunsevitsky was living in Singapore at the time, and was arrested when he arrived at Sydney airport in September 2017.

Many of his victims remain unknown.

The court heard he was born in the former USSR and came to Australia when he was 12.

He completed his graduate nursing training at the Royal Children’s Hospital, before working at the Austin Hospital and Dandenong Hospital in emergency intensive care units.

But when his nursing registration was suspended following a drug overdose in 1999, he moved to Singapore where he worked for a medical equipment firm.

It was in this job, the court heard, that he travelled throughout Asia and was able to commit his insidious crimes.

Kunsevitsky will be eligible for parole after serving 28 years.
