A father left blinded and in a coma after an alleged teen gang stabbing in Sydney has made a remarkable recovery in hospital.
Brett Halcro, 36, from Melbourne, has been moved into the recovery ward at the Royal Prince Alfred Hospital after almost three weeks in intensive care.
A family member said doctors have removed the bandages from Mr Halcro’s face and arms and that he is feeling positive about his road to recovery.
“His fitness and youth have led to pleasing progress, as remarked by the physiotherapists,” a relative said.
“His emotional wellbeing continues to fluctuate understandably, however I was incredibly proud to hear him speak with such perspective and with a relatively positive outlook on his long road ahead.
“He told me today that his daily highlights are visits/calls from family and also physio sessions.”
The savage attack on Mr Halcro shocked the nation and triggered more than $83,000 in donations to his recovery.
Last week Mr Halcro spoke to his daughter for the first time since the attack.
Therese Keecherer, his former partner, said: “Our little girl got to speak with her daddy for the first time in a long time last night over the phone. It was all very exciting and heartfelt”.
Nine teenagers from some of Sydney’s most elite private schools have been arrested over what police believe was a “planned and targeted attack”.
Court documents obtained by News Corp revealed one boy allegedly texted a friend saying: “I put the shattered bottle in his stomach and then (another boy) slit his face like 15 times and stabbed him in the eye.
