Man involved in car crash later charged with murdering his elderly mother

A man has been charged with murdering his elderly mother after he was involved in a South Gippsland car crash and rushed to hospital. In an unusual turn of events, her body was found several hours after the crash unfolded.

A man has been charged with the murder of his elderly mother in South Gippsland.

Trent Bird, 43, appeared before the Melbourne Magistrates’ Court on Sunday afternoon over the death of the his mother, Lorraine Bird.

The 73-year-old was found dead at a rural property on Pearsons Rd in Hedley, 200km east of Melbourne on August 10.

Her remains were discovered by police hours after her son had been injured in a car crash a short distance away.

Bird, believed to be a father-of-two, has been under police guard at Royal Melbourne Hospital until he was fit to be interviewed by detectives.

No application for bail was made when he appeared in court via video link from hospital, and he was remanded in custody until November 9.

The woman’s body was found after when police searched a property on the small country road.

One local woman said she felt “tense” when she heard the ambulance helicopter arrive in the small community’s local football field.

“It’s scary. You don’t see things like that [emergency services response] around here unless it’s something serious,” she said.

“When you hear the ambulance helicopter fly by, it’s very worrying because it means something very bad has happened.”
