Police are investigating a number of vehicles which were travelling in the area before a man was shot and critically injured at Narre Warren South yesterday.

Investigators say the cars were seen around the Shrives Rd area in the period before the early morning ambush yesterday morning.

It is unclear what the link is between the other vehicles and the shooting of the Audi driver.

Last night, police were hunting a gunman who blasted a man as he sat in his car in Melbourne’s southeast.

The victim is fighting for life after being shot in the head in the driveway of a property in Shrives Rd, Narre Warren South, at 5am.

The circumstances are being investigated. The victim did not live at the address where the shooting occurred, and therewas nothing to indicate his Audi had been forced into the driveway by another vehicle.

It is not clear who made the call for help, but ambulance officers were at the scene within minutes and transported the severelywounded man, in his 20s, to The Alfred hospital. He was last night in a critical condition.

Police forensics crews attended the crime scene yesterday morning, making a detailed examination. Broken glass was scatteredon the ground beneath the shattered driver’s side window. The car was later towed away to the forensics centre at Macleod.

The owner of the property, Rob Milkins, said he had no idea what happened and had not even heard the gunfire. “We’re fine.We don’t know anything about it,” the 49-year-old said. “It’s just a random thing that happened to occur out the front ofour house. I slept through it — I didn’t hear or see anything.

“It happened at 5am and there isn’t much that happens around here at that time.”

Another local, who did not want to be named, said it was a shock to find out someone had been shot so close to their home.

“It’s terrifying when something like this happens on your doorstep,” the homeowner said.

“Although it’s busy here with traffic, it’s usually pretty quiet. There might be the occasional robbery but nothing like this.Everyone keeps to themselves around here.”

The white Audi, which is registered in New South Wales, was sold by a Sydney dealership in December last year.

Victoria Police could not say whether the victim was down from Sydney.

Specialist investigators from the armed crime squad are looking for the shooter.
