Five inmates to be charged over brutal jailhouse murder of Mark Pollard

Four other inmates are set to be charged over the brutal jailhouse murder of Mark Pollard, who was allegedly bashed and stomped to death over his sneakers and a unique piece of jewellery. It comes as a man accused of his murder fronted court on Wednesday.

Another four men are to be charged with the brutal jailhouse murder of Mark Pollard.

Abdulkadir Ali, 34, fronted court on Wednesday morning via video link from Port Phillip prison, where he is serving a jail sentence for an unrelated matter.

Pollard, 48, was allegedly bashed and stomped to death inside the maximum security Port Phillip Prison in February.

Mr Ali has been charged with one count of murder.

Detective Senior Constable Dave Meneilly confirmed an additional five inmates will be charged over Mr Pollard’s death.

A gang of thugs allegedly attacked Pollard in the Gorgon unit for his unique ring and sneakers.

During the brief filing hearing, the court heard the alleged killing at the maximum security prison occurred following an attempted robbery of Mr Pollard.

The co-accused will face court on Friday.

Sister Amanda Pollard told the Herald Sun she was “very anxious” and wanted to see justice served.

“It has caused so much distress waiting over this,” Ms Pollard said.

“Mark was so gorgeous, he had so much going for him. It was all over his ring.

“It is going to be a rollercoaster for the next two years, as it goes through the courts. The scab is going to keep getting ripped off.”

Ms Pollard said her brother was “so gorgeous” and had “so much going for him”.

“We are both the victims of much injustice,” she said.

She believes the Truganina prison failed in its duty of care to provide a safe environment for her brother and may take legal action.

In March, private jail operator G4S said the murder was “unacceptable” and they had launched a critical review of the incident to understand how it occurred.

The police investigation into the incident remains ongoing.

Mr Ali will return to court in November for a committal mention.
