A man police initially believed was the victim in a $3.9 million daylight heist has been charged himself over the brazen robbery.

Daniel Ede, 37, appeared in court this afternoon and was charged with aggravated burglary, theft, perjury and firearms offences.

A bounty of gold, jewellery and cash was allegedly stolen from a gold dealer at the Melbourne Gold Company on Collins St on April 27.

Charge sheets allege Ede entered the building as a trespasser with intent to steal and was armed with a handgun.

He is also accused of making a false statement to police on April 27 in the Docklands.

Detectives found what they described as “significant quantities” of gold bullion and cash stashed alongside a loaded handgun and stolen number plates when they raided homes in Hawthorn East, Fitzroy, and a rural property in Dollar in South Gippsland earlier this month.

Earlier this month the court heard Karl Kamachi, 48, allegedly aimed a Glock handgun at dealer Daniel Ede inside the Collins St building before making off with $3.9 million in valuables.

But today, Ede was charged himself.

He was wearing a grey Nike T-shirt printed with the phrase “Just Do It” when he appeared in court.

He was remanded in custody and will next appear in court on July 24.

Mr Kachami is facing charges of armed robbery, theft, false imprisonment, armed with criminal intent, common law assault and two counts of non-prohibited person in possession of a handgun.

He was remanded in custody and will appear again at Melbourne Magistrates’ Court on July 24.

A 48-year-old Hawthorn East woman was also arrested over the heist but has been released pending further inquiries.

The investigation into the incident remains ongoing.
