Homemade guns among cache of weapons seized during police raid in Cheltenham

A major police sting has uncovered an arsenal of dangerous weapons in a suburban home, with a Cheltenham slapped with 33 charges as a result of the raid.

Homemade guns and gel blasters were among 16 firearms and banned weapons seized in a raid in Melbourne’s south.

Police will allege prohibited weapons were being manufactured and have arrested a 41-year-old man as part of Operation Mint.

The warrant was executed in Coolac St, Cheltenham, by officers from Prahran divisional response as part of Mint.

Investigators allegedly uncovered long-arms guns, assault rifle gel blasters, handgun gel blasters and homemade pen pistols.

Gel-blasters are a water-based weapon classed as illegal in Victoria because police believe they can project a missile.

Some have a strong likeness to real guns.

Also allegedly seized were banned weapons and accessories, including knuckledusters, tasers, nunchucks, firearm silencers, flick-knives, batons and slingshots.

A small hydroponic cannabis set-up, a small amount of prescription medication and methylamphetamine were also found at the property, police said.

The Cheltenham man has been hit with 33 charges, including possessing a handgun, possessing an imitation firearm, possessing a prohibited weapon, manufacturing a prohibited weapon, cultivating and trafficking cannabis, possessing a drug of dependence and dealing in property suspected of being the proceeds of crime.

He was bailed to appear at Melbourne Magistrates’ Court on February 23.

Officers from Operation Mint, which investigated illicit drug activity in the Port Phillip area, also raided a home in Montana Drive, Werribee, and arrested a 38-year-old man this morning.

A search of the house allegedly uncovered a small amount of methylamphetamine, heroin, cannabis, valium and a drug police called jungle juice.

The man was charged with 28 offences including trafficking heroin and methylamphetamine, drug possession, possessing amyl nitrite and possessing the proceeds of crime.

He was bailed to appear at Melbourne Magistrates’ Court on February 23.
