The family of a man killed in Frankston North last night have paid tribute to the father of two, describing him as a “top bloke who wouldn’t hurt a fly”.
Homicide detectives are investigating after being called to an address at Lehmann’s Crescent at 11.30pm, where they found the body of local man Peter Williams.
The victim’s cousin, Dean Stewart, opened up to the Herald Sun about his family’s heartache at finding out Mr Williams had been killed.
“Pete was a top bloke. He was very friendly and would help anyone,” Mr Stewart said.
“He was a quiet bloke, he liked a drink and that was about it.
“He was harmless, wouldn’t hurt a fly – he’d always help if someone needed a hand.
“He’s got two kids and now they’ve lost their dad.”
Mr Stewart explained that he found out something was wrong when a concerned neighbour phoned him to say police were at his cousin’s home.
“He was looking after my dog at the time. He was one of the closest cousins to me, we’d do anything for each other,” Mr Stewart said.
“Obviously we’re all pretty upset. It’s been a tough time for the family – Pete’s mum just passed away about six months ago. We’ve been doing it very hard.”
Emergency services discovered the man’s body after being called to Lehmann Crescent just after 11.30pm.
The circumstances surrounding his death are still unknown.
Jodi O’Mara, who has lived on the street for several years, was emotional as she paid tribute to her neighbour.
“He was a nice person – he was very chivalrous. He’s been here for over a year and has been looking after his cousin’s dog,” she told the Herald Sun.
“He was a good neighbour and it’s just very sad.”
Ms O’Mara said that drug related crimes are common in the area, although she doesn’t believe that drugs were behind this incident.
Another neighbour, who did not wish to be named, revealed that she called the police after she became concerned over a large group of people gathered at the address.
“It’s just going to give this area a worse reputation, it’s already a bad one. There are some good people in this neighbourhood too,” the local said.
“I did ring the cops about a week ago. There were a lot of people coming in and out of that unit, they weren’t the actual tenants. I felt unsafe.”
Police tape surrounds the scene at Lehmann’s Crescent, with detectives also closing off part of Monterey Community Park.
The carpark of the nearby Pines Forest Aquatic Centre has also been closed off.
Forensics officers and detectives are currently at the scene, while the coroner left the scene shortly before 8am.
