The widow of fallen police officer Kevin King says his death is a “devastating shock” to her and their three sons.
Mr King’s partner Sharron Mackenzie said her “heart was in pieces” after the death of her “rock” on Wednesday night’s Eastern Freeway tragedy.
“I’m totally devastated,” she said.
“My beautiful man, my life, my rock and my only love for 35 years is gone and life will never be the same.”
Ms Mackenzie said her husband was a “caring, considerate, gentle and kind hearted” person who had always been present with her and her three sons.
“He was a big softie who would do anything for absolutely anyone,” she said.
Mr King had worked for Victoria Police for six years, most recently in the Nunawading Highway Patrol.
Before that he had worked in the rag trade and as a personal trainer, but policing was his true passion.
“Policing was something Kevin seemed almost destined to do,” Ms Mackenzie said.
“He was searching for a long time for something that had meaning and we’d often joke that he seemed like a cop even long before he was a cop, it was his nature.
“He was always methodical, very well organised, and loved camaraderie.
“He loved going to work, it was his home away from home.”
Away from the job, Mr King loved having a kick of the footy, playing guitar and cooking Italian food.
His family had bought him a guitar amplifier for his 50th birthday earlier this year.
Mr King is survived by his three sons James, William, and Henry.
“Our three boys will miss so much about their father, not least going to the football with him, kicking the footy, or just joking with him and listening to his slightly daggy dad jokes,” Ms Mackenzie said.
“Kevin was from a very close-knit family and this is such a devastating shock for all of us.
“Our hearts are so broken.”
