A prisoner has been assaulted by another inmate at the maximum security Barwon Prison.

Emergency services were called to the jail in Lara about 4.10pm on Wednesday.

Ambulance Victoria said the prisoner was treated for upper body injuries and taken to hospital in a stable condition.

A Department of Justice and Community Safety spokeswoman said the inmate was hospitalised after an incident involving another prisoner.

She said the department takes any assault very seriously and refers all allegations of assault to Victoria Police for investigation.

The CFA had two fire trucks at the facility at 4.18pm but a spokesman said there was no fire and their services were not required.

Earlier this month another inmate at Barwon Prison was hospitalised with serious injuries after being assaulted.

A Victoria Police spokesman said at the time of the February 7 assault: “A 26-year-old man has been taken to a Melbourne hospital with serious injuries. Investigators have been told a male prisoner was assaulted by another prisoner.”

Disgraced cardinal George Pell was shifted to Barwon Prison in January after security fears prompted by a drone flying over the Melbourne Assessment Prison.
