Desperate search for answers over teen’s tragic stabbing death

Footage taken moments after a fatal brawl that saw a 17-year-old boy tragically stabbed to death in a quiet St Albans street could be the key to tracking down his killers.

Police investigating the murder of a teenage boy in Melbourne’s northwest have released CCTV of a number of people they want to speak to about the fatal stabbing.

Aguer Akech, 17, died in Regan St, St Albans following a brawl at nearby Keilor Plains station in the early hours of December 22 last year.

Police arrested 10 people on the night, however all were released and no one has been charged in connection with the death.

Detective Inspector Tim Day said it was “crucial” ­investigators tracked down the people in the footage.

“We are keen to hear from anyone who can identify any of the males, or alternatively, we ask any of those people shown in the footage to come forward and contact police themselves,” Insp Day said.

Following his death, Aguer’s devastated mother Martha Mayola said: “He was a very good boy … he was not part of a gang.”

Aguer’s death occurred after two groups of African youths armed with knives, fence posts and sticks clashed over a car.

The groups had argued after a silver Commodore was taken hours earlier following a soccer tournament at nearby Green Gully Reserve.

Police have since found that vehicle and it is now the subject of forensic analysis.

Detectives have today released images and CCTV footage as they appeal for information The CCTV footage shows a number of males, aged possibly in their mid to late teens through to their early 20s, near the railway station around the time of the brawl.

“We don’t know if any of the males in the CCTV were involved in the fatal stabbing,” Insp Day said.

“Because they were in the vicinity of the station at the time of the incident it’s possible that they were part of either group involved, or they may simply be valuable witnesses for our investigation.

“Either way, it’s crucial that we identify these people and speak to them.”

Police have been told two groups of young males met at the railway station around 11.30pm on Saturday December 21.

They had arranged to meet to settle the dispute regarding the silver Commodore.

The groups then went to a property at nearby Fox St about 1.20am on December 22, where a row broke out.

About 1.28am a number of people from the Fox St property chased the victim’s group back to the railway station.

During this altercation, Aguer was stabbed.

The groups then dispersed, with Aguer and a number of people from his group heading to Platform 1 of the railway station.

Police are also interested in three vehicles — the 2005 Commodore with South Australian registration S111 AZI that was the subject of the dispute, a 2010 silver Honda ­Accord and a 2019 white ­Hyundai Tucson.
