The uncovering of a porn and drugs stash is suspected of causing Hoddle St killer Julian Knight to go on a hunger strike.
The Herald Sun understands a memory stick containing pornography and a small quantity of the drug buprenorphine were found in Knight’s possession last week.
He was shifted to a management unit of maximum security Port Phillip Prison after the discovery was made.
But Knight did not accept the move well and stopped eating and drinking, resulting in his health deteriorating.
By late last week, he had to be taken away in an ambulance and was treated in a secure ward of St Vincent’s Hospital.
Knight, who is behind bars for the shooting murders of seven people at Clifton Hill in 1987, is now back at Port Phillip Prison.
The killer has a long history of contraband issues while in jail, having previously been caught with makeshift weapons, USB sticks and porn.
Knight last month lost a Supreme Court bid to start legal proceedings against the acting deputy manager of Port Phillip Prison, Ali Assafiri.
He is the subject of a litigation restraint order under the Vexatious Proceedings Act after spending many years entangling Corrections Victoria and its officials in legal battles.
Knight had fought against what he said was infringement of his rights to have the “common law right of unimpeded access to the courts.”
