Three prison officers are in hospital after being bashed at a maximum security prison.

An inmate launched the attack at Barwon Prison, near Geelong, at about 2.30pm today.

Two victims were taken to hospital for treatment of facial injuries and another for observation.

Staff are becoming increasingly frustrated at the number of violent incidents against officers at the prison.

The Sunday Herald Sun has been told there was anger that a number of inmates transferred to Barwon for poor behaviour at other jails were not put on management regimes to control them after arrival.

“WordSafe need to do a proper investigation and look at how the controls and systems to reduce occupational violence can be improved,” a spokesman for the Community and Public Sector Union said.

Police were at the jail, on Bacchus Marsh Rd at Lara, Saturday looking into the circumstances of what happened.

There have been a number of nasty incidents at Barwon in recent months.

A prisoner was taken to hospital last month after being stabbed in the neck with a makeshift knife.

In April, eight inmates were injured and three taken to hospital after brawling broke out.

A prisoner was taken to hospital in March after boiling water was thrown over him.
