Two businesses have been targeted in Melbourne’s southwest on Tuesday morning in the latest attacks believed to be linked to the war for control of the state’s illicit tobacco trade.

Police were first called to a tobacconist on Tarneit Rd in Werribee about 4am.

It is understood the offenders rammed a car into the front security roller shutter before attempting to set the store on fire.

They then fled the scene on foot, leaving the car behind.

An hour later, police were called to a Middle Eastern grocery store, Barakat International Goods, on Costas Drive in Hoppers Crossing after it was set on fire.

A passer-by managed to extinguish the blaze before emergency services arrived.

No one was inside either of the businesses at the time of the attacks.

A Victoria Police spokesman said the two incidents were being treated as “targeted attacks”.

There have been close to 70 tobacco store arsons since March last year.

On top of those have been firebombings of a range of businesses including restaurants, clubs and mechanical workshops.

Scores of cars — many prestige models — have also been blown up after being used to ram targets or as getaway vehicles.

Victoria Police established the Lunar taskforce in October last year to tackle those involved in the mayhem.

Lunar has so far made 65 arrests, among them a man regarded as one of the main protagonists.
