Residents in Melbourne’s southeastern suburbs have been urged to stay indoors following a factory fire in Cheltenham.

A ‘Watch and Act’ alert was issued for residents in Cheltenham, Moorabbin around 4pm on Sunday.

The Hewitt St fire is “not yet under control”, according to authorities.

“The smoke is travelling in a north-easterly direction, towards South Road,” the Vic Emergency incident alert said.

“Anyone located in the surrounding area should take shelter indoors immediately.”

Residents are also encouraged to close all exterior doors and windows, turn off heating and cooling systems and close fireplaces and vents.

Keys Road, between Chesterville Road and Warrigal Road, is closed.

“Traffic in the area may be affected,” the alert said.
