Video has captured the moment Melbourne soccer hooligans chased rivals through the streets and assaulted a visiting fan.
Footage of the ugly scenes emerged on Sunday on a Melbourne Victory “Ultra” supporters’ group Instagram page.
Police are investigating the violence, which left two security guards injured after Friday night’s big Victory-Sydney FC clash at AAMI Park.
The video shows Sydney fans being chased, allegedly by Victory supporters, on the way back to the CBD after a 1-1 draw between the clubs.
One outnumbered Sydney supporter who is on the ground then comes in for some rough treatment.
Followers of the Instagram page were pleased to see the footage, some them goading their rivals.
But other fans were dismayed after a period of good behaviour since the A-League was embarrassed by a pitch invasion in December, 2022.
Melbourne City Thomas Glover was hit with a bucket as marauding Victory fans ran amok.
“It was really disappointing,” one fan said of Friday night’s mayhem.
A Victoria Police statement confirmed emergency services had responded to reports of an affray.
The statement said it was understood two groups clashed in Flinders St and Batman at 10.30pm.
“One of the groups was being escorted by security following the completion of a soccer game,” the force statement said.
“Security attempted to intervene in the brawl before the groups fled the area prior to police arrival.
“Two of the security guards were treated at the scene for minor injuries.”
Football Australia said it was aware of video circulating which was “alleged to involve football spectators”.
“Due to the allegations, Football Australia is working through a process to obtain the full facts. We won’t be making any further comment at this time,” an FA statement said.
