Underworld figures trade theories about why Meshlin Marrogi’s crypt was broken into

Underworld figures are trading theories about why Meshlin Marrogi’s crypt was targeted in a callous break-in, with police believed to be investigating if they were trying to steal her body.

Cemetery raiders may have intended to steal the remains of crime boss George Marrogi’s sister or valuables placed with her body.

One theory believed to be under investigation is that whoever committed the callous break-in wanted to steal from Meshlin’s Marrogi’s crypt.

Meshlin’s resting place was the only one in the Preston General Cemetery mausoleum area disturbed by whoever broke in just before 5am on Sunday.

Those involved damaged an external window to get into the building then zeroed in on her crypt.

It is believed likely whoever carried out the crime would have known exactly where they were going to find the right crypt and may have been carrying tools.

The act is believed to have been a strike at her drug boss brother George, who is serving a 32-year prison sentence for the 2016 murder of underworld figure Kadir Ors at the Campbellfield Plaza shopping centre.

George has in the past been regarded as one of the most dangerous men in Melbourne’s Middle-Eastern organised crime landscape.

Meshlin, who died in 2021 at age 30, was a woman much-loved by her family and friends who farewelled her with an extraordinarily lavish funeral.

She was also suspected of being a key player in her brother’s drug empire, built in conjunction with his Notorious Crime Family gang.

Police believe Meshlin was behind a network of companies set up to launder the profits of George’s colossal drug importation interests.

There have been murmurings in the underworld that the intruders had been planning to take Ms Marrogi’s remains.

Police did not comment on that but said they were trying to work out whether any objects were missing.

“Police are making inquiries with the nominated family liaison person to determine what items may have been damaged or potentially stolen from the crypt,” a statement said.

“Detectives are following up a number of avenues of inquiry and are yet to rule anything out at this early stage in the investigation.”

The incident has come in a period of volatility in the MEOC scene with conflict simmering for months.

A series of connected firebombings on businesses and homes linked to MEOC figures has become the subject of a special police taskforce.

What police say was an unrelated wave of arson attacks had targeted tobacconist stores in the period before the spate of torchings.

It had been hoped the recent arrests of two men suspected of having links to the firebombing friction might take the volatility out of the situation.
