A legal aid lawyer for troubled actor Vince Colosimo says he is receiving counselling and working to be in his “best position” as he fronted court over $65,000 in unpaid fines.

The Underbelly star last year pleaded guilty to drug driving, with prosecutors arguing he should be jailed because he had more than 160 unpaid fines.

But he was instead handed another fine and banned from driving for 16 months, with a magistrate warning him he needed to sort out the outstanding penalties.

Colosimo reappeared in Melbourne Magistrates’ Court on Wednesday for an enforcement hearing that could have seen Fines Victoria apply for a warrant to search for and seize his property or vehicles to sell to recoup the outstanding debts.

But his Victorian Legal Aid lawyer Julia Munster successfully applied for a two-month adjournment, arguing her client had only recently received legal funding and she required more time to prepare her case.

“These are significant matters, there are significant quantum involved,” Ms Munster said.

“Mr Colosimo is making arrangements in relation to obtaining counselling and to really put himself in the best position.”

Ms Munster did not shed any light on whether Colosimo, who appeared via video link and was silent during the brief hearing, had paid off any of the outstanding fines.

Colosimo, 56, in October was handed a $2500 fine after he pleaded guilty to three charges including drug and unlicensed driving, and failing to give his real name to police.

Magistrate Olivia Trumble at the time warned the actor to pull his head “out of the sand” and deal with his unpaid fines that amounted to $65,215.

“They won’t go away,” she said.

“Fines Victoria will eventually catch up to you.”

Colosimo’s bail was extended and he will return to court on July 13.
