Twenty youths arrested after spate of car thefts in Melbourne’s east and southeast

A 12-year-old is among 20 youths arrested in a crackdown on a spate of aggravated burglaries in suburbs ranging from Glen Waverley to Cheltenham.

Twenty-one cars, with a combined worth of $800,000, have been recovered in a wave of arrests on teenagers as young as 12 in Melbourne’s east and southeast.

Eight youths were remanded and another 12 arrested by police investigating a spate of aggravated burglaries and car thefts across the suburbs.

Police will allege the 20 youths arrested were responsible for 61 incidents in an 11-day crime spree which ended when Operation Alliance detectives from the Southern Metro Crime Team and the Youth Gang Team from Dandenong made their move.

Most have been charged with serious bail breaches.

Charges relate to aggravated burglaries, burglaries and car thefts in the suburbs of Officer, Balwyn North, Balwyn, Surrey Hills, Glen Waverley, Wantirna South, Scoresby, Malvern, Malvern East, Mt Eliza, Mulgrave, Heathmont, Bayswater, Ashwood, Aspendale Gardens, Waterways, Heatherton, Brighton East, Glen Iris, and Cheltenham.

The 21 stolen cars recovered came from 17 addresses in those suburbs.

Six suspects were involved in one of the crimes at a home in Peverill Street, Malvern East, on December 23 at 1.55am.

The entered via an unlocked door but woke two victims in the process.

The intruders stole two sets of car keys and a red Mazda which was found later in the morning at Mary Street, Springvale.

Eight of the youths arrested have been remanded for children’s court hearings.

They are

A 15-year-old boy who is charged with assault, theft of motor vehicle, theft, criminal damage, and commit an indictable offence while on bail.

A 12-year-old boy on charges of false imprisonment, theft of motor vehicle, burglary, robbery, theft, obtain property by deception, and commit an indictable offence while on bail.

Another seven youths have been bailed to appear before a children’s court.

They are a 14-year-old boy charged with assault, affray, aggravated burglary, theft of motor vehicle, theft, burglary, trespass, criminal damage and commit an indictable offence while on bail.

Five youths arrested and interviewed were released and will be charged on summons.

No one was injured in the burglaries.
