‘There was trauma’: Alleged victim of Jeffrey ‘Joffa’ Corfe speaks out

Pedophile Jeffrey “Joffa” Corfe has denied a fresh allegation he sexually assaulted a teenager in the Flinders Street Station public toilet after a footy game.

Convicted pedophile Jeffrey “Joffa” Corfe has denied a new allegation of a sexual assault in the late 1990s.

“The whole thing is a lie,” he said on Friday afternoon.

“Looking forward to hearing from the police. I’ll be waiting for them outside my front door.”

Corfe told the Herald Sun that many things written about him in the last two years have been terrible and untrue.

The denial comes as police investigate a new allegation of a sexual assault in the late 1990s.

The Herald Sun can reveal another man this week came forward to detectives.

Corfe, who avoided jail this year for the sexual penetration of a child under 16, now lives in Queensland.

Thomas – not his real name – told the Herald Sun he met the former Collingwood cheer squad leader through a hotline for LGBTQ teenagers when he was just 15.

Six months later, on March 28, 1999, he attended a Collingwood v Hawthorn game at the MCG.

Afterwards, he and Corfe walked to Flinders Street Station where Thomas, by then 16, says he was sexually assaulted in the public toilets. Corfe was 39 at the time.

“I had a rough time after it first happened,” Thomas told the Herald Sun. “There was trauma. It’s all good now, but I need him to face up to it.”

Thomas did not report the alleged attack at the time, but on Monday gave police a detailed statement.

“He needs to be held accountable,” he said.

In February, Corfe avoided prison when County Court judge Gerard Mullaly gave him a suspended 12-month sentence for the historic assault of a 14-year-old boy.

The victim in that case, Alex Case, who has given the Herald Sun permission to use his name, said he was shocked that Corfe was allowed to walk free.

In sentencing, Judge Mullaly referred to “good character” references submitted by Corfe’s lawyer. But the Herald Sun revealed serious issues around their validity.

One that was “undated” in court documents was written by the former Epilepsy Foundation fundraising manager Jeremy Maxwell years before any allegations against Corfe.

“It’s an appalling betrayal,” Mr Maxwell told the Herald Sun of Corfe’s use of the old reference.

Corfe’s lawyer, Louis Dean, said he had tried to contact Mr Maxwell without success.

Another reference came from Father Bob Maguire, who died this week. The priest and charity worker was confused that his name was used, but the Herald Sun understands this reference was organised by a third party inside Father Bob’s charity foundation.

Despite concerns over the references, the Director of Public Prosecutions, Kerri Judd, decided not to appeal. Her office said it was not responsible for checking the validity of character references.

Victims of Crime Commissioner Fiona McCormack called on the government to make fixing this a priority.

“While victims have to submit victim impact statements as statutory declarations, and abide by strict evidentiary rules, offenders’ good character references are seemingly submitted without any real checks and balances,” she said.

Premier Daniel Andrews said stricter rules may be needed in Victoria.

A police spokesman confirmed the Melbourne sexual offences & child abuse investigation team was “investigating a historical sexual assault of a 16-year-old boy”.

Corfe was contacted for comment.
