Five teens including a 15-year-old have been arrested after leading police on a chase across Melbourne in a stolen car following an aggravated burglary in Brighton.
Police were called to a house on Moule Ave around 12:20am on Monday after the homeowners confronted an intruder in the home.
The intruder ran from the house but fled in the homeowners’ Mercedes Tourer van.
Police on patrol spotted the car on the Nepean Highway near South Road heading towards the city and called in the air wing.
The stolen vehicle travelled through various areas including St Kilda Rd, Southbank, onto the Monash Freeway and over the Bolte Bridge, hitting speeds of up to 170 km/h.
It exited the freeway at Footscray Rd before heading into Yarraville where it was dumped in Yarraville Gardens and the occupants fled on foot.
“Five people were seen running from the vehicle before they jumped fences into backyards,” police said in a statement.
“The air wing assisted local police, and a dog squad unit, as they moved in and cordoned the area.”
Two youths were arrested after they were found on the roof of a home, two were arrested trying to hide in a backyard shed and a fifth teen was arrested in a backyard.
Four males and one female, aged between 15 to 17 years old, are expected to be questioned over the aggravated burglary, theft of a motor vehicle, and traffic related offences.
Detectives are also investigating whether the group were also involved in an aggravated burglary in Bentleigh before they were located by police.
A resident of Moule Ave said they were worried about the escalating crime in the area.
“Unfortunately it’s happening around this area with increasing frequency,” they said.
“I think all the residents around here are concerned about it.
“It’s not helped by the fact that we no longer have a local police station in Brighton.”
