Gippsland League under-18 brawl

A teenager arrested after delivering a brutal punch in a junior country football match has been banned for six weeks.

The teenage victim is considering legal action after being left concussed and with facial injuries after copping a blow to the head during a Gippsland League under-18’s match on Saturday.

Graphic vision obtained by the Herald Sun shows the apprentice plumber being struck by the 16-year-old during a wild melee on the final siren between Sale and Drouin.

Footage of the incident shows the player, who cannot be named for legal reasons, throw a right-handed punch to the head of the Drouin player, before launching an enormous left hook at the already dazed 18-year-old.

He says his head was turned away when the second fist struck which is why it is such a big issue.

“You can see that I’m not facing him … it’s a stupid act, especially when the bloke isn’t facing you,” he said.

“It’s sickening, considering the kid’s not even 17 (yet),”

“I remember blacking out for a bit then … not being able to move my body, barely being able to speak.”

Witnesses of the shocking act were in disbelief as to what they had seen.

“(It) was honestly the worst thing I’ve ever seen on a football field,” Drouin coach Harry Wans said.

“I was so close to jumping out and getting involved.

“(It) took the ambulance 45 minutes to get him off the field.”

The victim claims the Sale player boasted to others about the callous hit.

“He ran off, then was apparently being lippy to everyone saying ‘yeah I knocked that kid out’,”

Police arrested the boy at the scene before releasing him pending further investigations.

The victim was taken to hospital in an ambulance, suffering only mild concussion and a hugely bruised eye.

The league is investigating further incidents which also occurred in the melee.

Sale Football Netball club director Sam Anstee said the club was disappointed by the incident.

“It’s a poor reflection on the club,” he said.

“He’s a terrific young kid, and we just don’t want to see it happen to anyone on a football field regardless of what the precursors are.”

The police investigation remains ongoing.
