Teen allegedly involved in Beach Rd hit-runs told police he’d offend again

A teenager allegedly involved in two hit-runs of cyclists along Beach Rd has applied for bail, telling police he planned to continue offending because he was ‘bored’.

A teenage boy was on four separate sets of bail when a stolen car he was allegedly on board mowed down cyclists on Beach Road – and he wants bail again.

The 16-year-old made a fresh application for bail in a childrens’ court on Friday, where police described him as a danger to society.

It comes as the court heard one of the cyclists suffered brain damage in the callous alleged hit-run.

The 72-year-old cyclist knocked off his bike on January 23 was treated at The Alfred for bleeding to the brain in addition to serious spinal fractures also suffered by the second victim, 52-year-old Glen Gibson.

The court on Friday heard that while in custody, the boy — one of six teens charged over the cyclist attacks — told police he planned to continue offending until he returned to school because he was “bored”.

In opposing bail, Senior Constable Nerdin Efendic of Dandenong Crime Investigation Unit said the boy craved criminal notoriety, had a history of disregarding his bail conditions and was known to recruit less hardened youth to commit violent crimes.

“He seems to be very influential amongst his associates,” Senior Constable Efendic told the court.

“He’s taken children aged 14 – 16 with minimal criminal priors to aggravated home invasion and armed robberies with him.”

Senior Constable Efendic said the boy was on four sets of bail on charges including robbery, unlawful assault, aggravated home invasion, attempted aggravated burglary and car thefts at the time of the Beach Rd hit-runs.

The officer told the court custody was the only option to stop the boy from offending.

“I don’t think there are any conditions the court could impose that would stop him,” Senior Constable Efendic said.

“He gets a kick out of doing the wrong thing and going against the legal system. It gets him credibility with his co-accused. If he keeps offending, the more street cred he gets, per se, and the more people will be scared of him.”

Graphic Snapchat footage was circulated of the cyclists being hit allegedly for social media clicks.

The footage captured one youth inside the stolen car egging the driver on, saying: “Hit him, hit him, hit him”, the court heard.

The 16-year-old is separately charged with multiple other offences, including a violent armed robbery in Dandenong North where he allegedly punched a victim twice in the face before stealing his iPhone.

The victim was threatened with an axe during the terrifying confrontation on January 31.

The boy’s bail application was struck out on Friday after his lawyer flagged concerns about new charges raised by the prosecution.

A new bail application will be heard on February 28.
