Three children sleeping inside a western suburbs home as it was peppered with bullets in a drive-by shooting have escaped unharmed.

Detectives say a car pulled up to the single-storey brick home on St Michael Drive in Tarneit just before 3am on Tuesday before several shots were fired at the home.

At least six bullet holes were plastered into the front door and garage.

“Two adults and three children were inside the property at the time and were not injured,” police said in a statement.

A luxury white Mercedes was parked in the driveway on Tuesday morning.

The home is equipped with a comprehensive security system including an electronic steel gate.

Sturdy security screens also covered much of the facade, including the front windows and garage.

Local detectives established a crime scene on Tuesday morning and investigations are ongoing.

The male occupant of the home in question is reportedly known to police.

Neighbours say there has previously been trouble at the St Michael Drive home in the past.
