A man accused of attempting to murder his younger brother in Kalkallo on Saturday night has learnt his sibling has regained consciousness.

The news came as Elias Natano, 27, faced Melbourne Magistrates’ Court on Monday charged with more than 40 offences, including stabbing his sibling and then driving over him as he lay on the footpath.

It is alleged Mr Natano, a learner driver, then sparked a massive police chase in the early hours of Sunday morning as he fled police parked outside his Mickleham home, which led to a police chase towards Campbellfield.

After Mr Natano crashed into a roadside barrier on Mickleham Road, it is alleged he pulled a knife on approaching officers and stole their $120,000 BMW highway patrol car.

A passing motorist offered to give the stranded officers a lift and the pursuit continued as more police cars joined in.

After allegedly driving the stolen police car at high speed, police say Mr Natano crashed into three stationary cars at a red light at the Barry Road intersection.

No one was seriously injured but one motorist was taken to hospital.

Police and the dog squad then chased Mr Natano on foot.

The accused man was eventually “nudged” to the ground by a patrol car and restrained by the dog unit.

Mr Natano was charged with offences including attempted murder, aggravated carjacking, affray and threats to assault a police officer.

He was also charged with reckless conduct endangering serious injury and criminal danger by fire in connection with a separate incident on Saturday that police said left a woman in hospital with serious injuries.

During the arrest, two officers were bitten by a police dog and required surgery.

Mr Natano’s lawyer, Chen Yang, told the court on Monday that it was his client’s first time in custody.

The court was told the accused was withdrawing from alcohol and drugs also needed a medical assessment.

‘’There are some mental health issues that need to be explored,’’ Mr Yang said.

Mr Natano’s family watched the hearing via a link to the court.

Mr Natano, who did not apply for bail, was remanded to reappear in court on June 28.
