A mother hid in a pantry after a bullet hit her kitchen as around 20 gunshots were unleashed in a targeted attack on a man in Melbourne’s northwest.

The terrifying incident happen after two men dressed in black exited a blue Audi S3 and tried to shoot another man as he walked his dog on parkland on Monticiano Rd in Fraser Rise about 7pm on Wednesday.

The woman, a resident of nearby Hawking Crescent, had just said goodbye to two of her adult daughters and begun cooking dinner when the gunfire began.

“I thought at first it was fireworks they were so loud and sharp,” the woman, who did not wish to be named, told the Herald Sun.

“But then I realised there was far too many pops for it to be fireworks.”

The mother said someone banging on her front door also made her realise something far more sinister than fireworks was at play.

“There was someone pounding with all their might in the front door and I knew someone was shooting,” she said.

“I ducked below my kitchen cabinets because I thought the bullets would come through the windows and they would shatter any second.”

The woman then crawled along her living room floor to her dining table, grabbed her phone and called for help before retreating inside her pantry for shelter.

“I called my daughters to come back and get me and told them someone was shooting at the house because that’s what I believed was happening,” she said.

“I didn’t leave the pantry for ages after the gunshots because I was so scared. I was in tears and probably sat in there for five to seven minutes.”

After the shooting had stopped the woman emerged from her pantry to find a bullet hole in her ceiling and a bullet that had landed only a metre away from where she had been hiding.

“It’s really left me on edge,” she said of the incident.

“I’ve been really insistent now on having someone at home with me and the doors locked.”

“I even discussed with my sons of moving to another neighbourhood or even just moving back to New Zealand.”

The mother’s daughter, Tina, said she thought her mum was “imagining things” when she rang in a frantic state.

“But then when we came home we saw a bullet right next to her in our kitchen,” Tina said.

“The fact that the bullet was right next to her when she came out was really terrifying,” Tina said.

“Then we had police and forensics in and out all night so it’s been a tough day.”

The shooters fled the scene after the shooting with the Audi located on fire a short time later in Viridian Drive in the nearby suburb of Hillside.

Police believe another burnt-out car, a red Holden Commodore, found on Parsley St in Caroline Springs, is also likely involved in the attack.

“It is believed that this was not a random attack and no-one was injured as a result,” police said in a statement.

The target of the shooting was not injured in the attack.

Another Hawking Crescent resident, Akash, caught the sound of rapid gunfire on his home’s CCTV.

The footage captures 20 shots being fired in two separate volleys.

“We really did think someone had set off fireworks in the park,” he said.

“Then we saw the police setting up on the other side of the park and we realised it had been bullets.”

A man who was having drinks at a friend’s place across from the parklands heard the initial gunshots and believed they were fireworks.

“We had the garage door down and saw a blue car go cruising past really slowly,” he said.

“Then we heard this loud ‘bang, bang’ and looked and saw this man with his dog running away from the blue car on the street.

“He left his dog at the fence to the park and jumped over and just took off.”

Another resident said he heard a number of loud “pops” followed by tyres screeching.

“It happened really quickly,” the man said.

“I think the reason the police got a phone call was because the sound carried through the area and everyone was home at that time to hear it.”

Anyone who witnessed the incident, has CCTV or dashcam footage or information is urged to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 or submit a confidential report at www.crimestoppers.com.au
