Ex-Neighbours star Scott McGregor is expected to have his sexual assault charge dropped following claims he attacked a woman at a popular St Kilda bar.

McGregor, who failed to appear in the Melbourne Magistrates’ Court on Friday, was facing a single charge of sexual assault relating to an alleged incident at the Hotel Esplanade, known as “The Espy”, in St Kilda about 8pm on February 20 last year.

But his lawyer Thomas Isaac told the court the matter had likely been resolved, with the charge expected to be downgraded to common law assault.

He said his client, who has always denied the claim, would likely welcome the adjustment but requested that the magistrate wait until McGregor was in court to give his approval.

Magistrate Donna Bakos inquired about whether the woman wanted to submit a victim impact statement but the prosecutor said one had not been filed.

McGregor played police detective Mark Brennan in Neighbours for over a decade, appearing in 940 episodes.

He has also previously appeared in Underbelly, Offspring and Winners & Losers, and was a model in the TV game show Temptation.

He lives in the affluent bayside suburb of Brighton East with his wife, Bianka Voigt, and their two children.

McGregor was ordered to appear in person in the same court on August 14.
