Ricky Nixon trades barbs with Magistrate Jonathan Klestadt in latest court appearance

The controversial former AFL player agent has traded barbs with a magistrate in a testy exchange as he faces more legal dramas.

A magistrate has told Ricky Nixon that “shit happens” as the disgraced ex-AFL player agent complained to court over a $300 speeding fine.

Nixon returned to the online Melbourne Magistrates Court on Friday, not over parking tickets for his ‘ambulance’ this time but for allegedly speeding on the Midland Highway on his way to play golf.

The 59-year-old told Magistrate Jonathan Klestadt he was heading to a Neale Daniher charity golf event – “that’s not really relevant,” His Honour remarked – when he was clocked driving 92km/h in an 80km/h zone, on June 14, 2021.

In an at-times testy exchange in which His Honour told Nixon he was “not going to banty words with you”, the Port Melbourne man claimed a “digital sign” had shown the speed was due to change from 100km/h to 80km/h at midnight.

It was about 10.35pm and there was a railway crossing up ahead, Nixon said.

“I’ve never seen anything like that,” His Honour replied.

“I’ve spent a lot of time in the country ... (and) those signs, I’ve never come across one that changes.”

Mr Klestadt said the speed was also 80km/h across a railway line.

Nixon said he’d contacted the traffic camera office “five times” but the office claimed to have no record of him contacting by phone or email.

Magistrate Klestadt told Nixon he wouldn’t be surprised if he had contacted the office and they hadn’t responded but “to use the vernacular, shit happens, these things do occur”.

“I’m sorry if I may be sounding a bit blasé but we’re talking about a fine of $300 or something,” His Honour said.

Despite an offer to have the matter done and dusted, Nixon confirmed his not guilty plea and that he’d like to return to court for a full-day hearing before a Magistrate in February.

Mr Klestadt asked Nixon whether a lawyer would appear for him, or if he was unsure.

“I”m not unsure I’m just not going to tell you until I decide,” Nixon replied, prompting a chuckle from Mr Klestadt.

“That suggests you haven’t decided yet, which means you’re unsure ... I’m not going to banty words with you,” His Honour said.

Nixon was ordered to appear at Melbourne Magistrates’ Court on February 8, 2023 to fight his speeding fine.

“Look forward to it, thank you,” he said.

Nixon hit the headlines in July after he was captured on camera allegedly knocking reporter Seb Costello in the jaw.

The A Current Affair reporter was ‘bouncing’ Nixon outside his Bay St home after doctors in the Herald Sun criticised his latest move to offer $350 intravenous infusion treatments.

His mobile ‘ambulance’ van, which has collected numerous parking tickets, had been offering Covid-19 testing and flu vaccinations.

Victoria Police later confirmed it was not laying charges over the Nixon/Costello scuffle.
