A man who stabbed to death his wife and six-year-old daughter at their home in Melbourne’s northern suburbs has pleaded guilty to their murders.

Prabhal Sharma, 41, at the Supreme Court on Friday entered a guilty plea to the murders of his wife, Poonam Sharma, 39, and daughter Vanessa, 6, in Mill Park in January this year.

When asked for his plea to the murder of his wife, the former taxi driver who appeared via video link from custody said: “I plead guilty”.

Sharma’s lawyer, Raphael de Vietri said a report prepared by a psychiatrist who assessed the murderer would not support a defence on the grounds of mental impairment.

On January 13, emergency services were called to Kellaway Crescent in Mill Park to reports of screaming from the Sharma family home.

Poonam, Vanessa and Prabhal were found with critical injuries.

Prabhal’s stab wounds were self-inflicted and he spent weeks in hospital under police guard.

The couple’s marriage was arranged by relatives in India before the pair wed and migrated to Australia to start their family.

At the time of the fatal incident, they were in the process of separating.

Sharma will return to the Supreme Court on December 15 for a pre-sentence hearing.
