A man is in hospital under police guard following the mysterious death of another man in a Port Melbourne alleyway on Friday.
Police were called to a laneway off Nott St in Port Melbourne about 10am following reports a man had been found with serious injuries.
Witnesses say the man was bleeding profusely from his head before emergency services arrived.
Paramedics are believed to have performed CPR on the man but he died at the scene.
He was on Friday evening yet to be formally identified.
A 36-year-old Port Melbourne man was arrested in a carpark nearby about three hours after the man’s death.
Residents claim he was tasered and pepper sprayed by police during the dramatic arrest within the crime scene.
“A man in his 30s with upper body injuries was transported by road ambulance to hospital in a stable condition,” an Ambulance Victoria statement read
A policeman appeared to have suffered a hand injury during the arrest and was taken to hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.
Homicide squad detectives and forensic crews arrived at Nott St early on Friday afternoon.
Those members were on Friday evening investigating a range of possible causes for the man’s death.
One of those is that he suffered critical head injuries as witnesses claim they saw the victim on the ground with blood pouring from his head.
That witness told the Herald Sun he saw a black Suzuki Swift narrowly miss the victim moments earlier.
There was also a suggestion among locals that he had been stabbed but that was not confirmed by authorities.
The man’s body was removed from the scene at 5.30pm on Friday.
Nearby residents say Port Melbourne has become riddled with crime in recent months.
“There’s been problems for a while now, we’ve been asking for it to be cleaned up,” one local said.
“We’re sick of it.”
Another woman said she no longer feels safe walking around Port Melbourne.
“I just can’t believe it, in my own suburb where I live,” she said.
“This is supposed to be a very safe area for everyone … (I feel) very unsafe.
“I’ve been here for 10 years and I’m actually thinking about moving away from here.”
Nott St remained a cordoned off crime scene on Friday evening.
Investigations into the man’s death continue.
