A Broadmeadows grandfather wanted for questioning over an alleged murder in Albanvale is fighting for life after he wielded a screwdriver at police and was shot in Melbourne’s northern suburbs on Monday.
Daniel Heaney, 64, from Broadmeadows allegedly attempted to evade police in his vehicle, then on foot, on Monday afternoon in Coburg North.
He was shot by a detective on Newlands Road about 4.40pm after allegedly brandishing a screwdriver at officers following a short foot pursuit.
It’s believed the officer fired at least two shots, hitting the man twice in the upper body, North West Metro Region Acting Commander Rick Paterson said.
Heaney was rushed to Royal Melbourne Hospital with upper and lower body injuries and was in a critical condition on Tuesday night, a spokesperson said.
Commander Paterson said the man was wanted for questioning over the death of a 56-year-old man who died from stab wounds in Albanvale on Saturday.
Police were called to an address at Opie Rd in Albanvale where they found the man unconscious about 7.45am on Saturday.
He died at the scene despite the efforts of emergency services. No charges have been laid.
Police said they had spotted the man driving a vehicle nearby and attempted to pull him over.
“It’s believed the man saw the police and took off in his vehicle with police in pursuit,” police said in a statement.
A short distance away, two Crime Investigation Unit detectives chased the man on foot, when he allegedly confronted them with the screwdriver.
An officer responded by shooting the man.
Commander Paterson said he had not spoken directly to the officers involved, but it would be a “really difficult time for them”.
“No one comes to work wanting to be involved in a critical incident,” he said on Monday night.
“This is a traumatic incident for them.
“We’ll be supporting the members through this difficult period.”
A nearby resident said they heard five shots being fired in total.
“I heard two shots, then some yelling and three more shots after a short period of time,” witness Julian Cross said.
“It was followed by plenty of sirens and a helicopter. It is getting a little close to home if it is related to everything in the last week.”
Resident Thomas Johnstone said he heard the shooting unfold outside of his Newlands Rd residence.
“I heard five or six gunshots and heard the cop cars and multiple cars coming over. I didn’t think anything of it at the time.
“Once we saw the police tape come up in our house we saw ambulance and police around the Coburg parking lot.”
“We did see someone on the stretcher.”
Police said there was “no link” to Saturday’s shooting of Sam Abdulrahim in Fawkner.
Abdulrahim was shot four times while driving his $300,000 Mercedes G-Class 4WD in his cousin’s funeral procession near Fawkner Cemetery just after noon.
The incident would be investigated by Armed Crime Squad detectives, with oversight by Professional Standards Command, as per normal procedure when a police firearm is discharged, police said.
No one else was injured in the incident.
Anyone with further details is urged to contact Crime Stoppers.
