A man found dead in one of two weekend homicide investigations has been remembered as “the best bloke ever”.

Hugh Brannan was found with serious injuries inside a unit on Iffla St in South Melbourne just before 7.30pm on Friday night but died at the scene.

It is not known how Mr Brannan, 30, suffered his fatal injuries but homicide detectives are continuing their investigations.

Mr Hannan had been staying at a friend’s place when it was reportedly subject to a home invasion at the time. Up to four offenders are reportedly being hunted by authorities.

Mr Brannan’s friends and associates told the Sunday Herald Sun he would be sorely missed.

Close friend Shana Rufatt said he was the “most loyal and kindhearted friend”.

“Hughey, I know everybody says this but truly; you were the best, most loyal and kind-hearted friend and person anybody could have asked for,” she said.

“I’m in so much shock that you’re gone. It’s so surreal, I wish I was dreaming. I hope you’re in a better place my Hughey. Thank you for everything, the world and my heart is a darker place after last night.

“I love you with all my heart and will always be missing your beautiful smile. I’m sorry Hugh, you deserved so much more.”

Jade Zavaglia said she was in disbelief over her friend’s mysterious death.

“How could anyone hurt him, how can anyone… just take a life like that? My stomach is turning and hurting,” she said.

“I don’t understand why god allowed him to leave this earth now... he wasn’t ready but my heart is so full, it’s just not fair.”

Mr Brannan’s mate Bronson Flanagan said he was fiercely loyal.

“The Hughey I knew was the best bloke ever, had the best qualities, very loyal,” he said.

Homicide detectives quizzed neighbours surrounding Iffla St on Saturday and examined several sets of CCTV footage.

They were also seen scouring nearby footpaths, bushes and bins for any potential clues.

It is not known who was involved in the man’s death and no arrests had been made as of Saturday evening.
