The death of a man in a St Kilda apartment shooting tragedy will be referred to the coroner.

Police are believed to be investigating whether the fatal gunshot wound suffered by Jesse Mocellin was the result of a tragic accident.

They say there are no suspicious circumstances surrounding the events inside the Meridian complex on Alma Rd in the early hours of Monday March 24.

It is expected an inquest will be held at a later date.

Local police are preparing a brief of evidence into the death of Mr Mocellin, a 32-year-old with a passion for boxing.

Mr Mocellin is believed to have suffered a single gunshot wound just before 7am.

Emergency services were called to the scene but he could not be saved.

Investigators have spoken to a woman who was with Mr Mocellin when the fatal shot was fired.

The death is not believed to have been the result of foul play and one theory is that what happened may have been a case of misadventure.

Detectives visited the apartment, near St Kilda Rd, and spoken to residents.

A weapon, believed to have been a handgun, will undergo ballistics analysis.

Forensic experts have made a detailed examination of the death scene.

Loved ones have remembered Mr Mocellin as a “kind” man who would be missed by many.

“I am lost for words,” one friend wrote on social media.

“Thank you for being the best friend to my daughter.”

“Yet another life taken from us way too soon,” another friend said.

“Rest in Paradise Angel, until we meet again.”

The apartment where Mr Mocellin was fatally injured is inside the Meridian complex.

It is unclear whether Mr Mocellin was living there or was visiting.

“While the exact circumstances are still being determined, the matter is not being treated as suspicious,” a Victoria Police statement said.

Mr Mocellin had previously been friendly with Melbourne man Vince Atulia, who died with his mate Andrew Colivas in tragic circumstances in Vietnam last year.

It was revealed at the time that police were investigating whether the pair had suffered drug overdoses.
