A Frankston dance music fan has been revealed as the man whose remains were found tied up along a busy train line in Melbourne’s southeast after a suspicious house fire.
Matthew Warrington, who was allegedly murdered between July 15-17 at a house on Binalong Ave in Chadstone, enjoyed listening to trance music and was active in several groups about the genre.
Mr Warrington often posted about new music released by local artists and upcoming dance music events.
He ran into trouble with the law in 2020 when police found him in possession of a slew of drugs associated with dance culture, including GHB, ice, cannabis and magic mushrooms.
Mr Warrington was jailed for 183 days in August 2021 after a court heard he withdrew money from his superannuation during the pandemic to purchase the drugs.
He pleaded guilty to several drug trafficking and possession offences.
Two people have been charged with Mr Warrington’s murder after his body was discovered along a busy train line in the wake of the fire.
Dylan Wyatt, 35, and Kasha McIver, 36, fronted the Melbourne Magistrates’ Court on Saturday after they were arrested by detectives on Friday over the alleged fatal assault.
Charge sheets released by the court reveal Mr Warrington – believed to be aged in his 40s – was allegedly murdered sometime between July 15-17.
Emergency services were called to a fire at the same property on July 18 about 9pm.
The house was unoccupied at the time and the blaze was deemed suspicious, a Fire Rescue Victoria spokesperson said.
Mr Warrington’s body was found three days later by police on Railway Parade near the Glen Waverley train line – about 500m from where he was allegedly attacked.
The Herald Sun understands his body was found tied up.
The court heard Mr Wyatt, from Seaford, is also facing charges including drug possession, making a threat to kill and committing an indictable offence while on bail, while Ms McIver has also been charged with drug trafficking.
Mr Wyatt’s defence lawyer Ella Parkes-Talbot said her client would need to see a custody nurse because he had sustained a “number of injuries” during his arrest.
Ms McIver also requested to see a custody nurse, telling the magistrate she is “not coping”.
Meanwhile, forensic investigators on Saturday morning returned to the scene and could be seen sifting through a garbage bin and debris in the front yard.
All of the windows of the Binalong Ave property were boarded up with wooden planks.
Neighbour Wade Dixie said police often attended the home.
“We all knew something bad was coming,” she said.
“(But) this is an awful thing to have happened.”
Another neighbour, who did not wish to be named, said Ms McIver lived at the house.
“Once my housemates and I saw how many people were coming in and out of the house we all decided to stay away from that house,” he said.
She said there were always “a lot of people” coming and going from the house.
Neither Mr Wyatt nor Ms McIver made an application for bail.
The pair were remanded in custody.
They will return to court on November 27 for a committal mention.
