No charges for Wayne Carey over Crown white powder saga

Wayne Carey made the shock call after WA police confirmed he would not be charged over a bag of powder he dropped at a Perth casino.

Carey - Casino had two opportunities to call police

Footy legend Wayne Carey will step away from all media commitments next year as it was confirmed he won’t be returning to Channel 7.

On Thursday it was revealed the footy legend would not be charged over a bag of powder he dropped at a Perth casino.

Western Australian police were called in to investigate after the bag fell from Carey’s pocket during a night out on September 1.

The former Kangaroo premiership player said the substance in the bag was crushed anti-inflammatory medication he used to control pain from his playing days.

“This investigation has been finalised and no criminal charges have been preferred,” a WA Police spokeswoman said.

Managing Director Seven Melbourne and Head of Network Sport, Lewis Martin, said: “We have been in regular dialogue with Wayne Carey as the WA Police investigation was conducted. Wayne has advised Seven that due to the media attention he and his family have received as a result of this incident, he doesn’t intend to do any media in 2023. We wish to thank Wayne for his service to Seven.”

WA Police Chief Commissioner Col Blanch said in the aftermath of the incident that the casino should have contacted police about what had happened.

He said almost a week later that investigators were on the “back foot” as they started their inquiry.

“We didn’t have the initial complaint at the time it occurred, which would have been my preference,” Mr Blanch told radio station 6PR.

“It will be very difficult without the substance itself to prove whether it was an illicit substance or otherwise.”

Carey, 51, works for Channel 7 and was in Perth as part of his commentary duties.

The TV network has stood Carey down and he will not return to radio station Triple M next year.

Carey has been banned from Crown’s casino complexes for the next two years.

The centre half-forward played 272 game and is regarded as one of the greatest players in the game’s history.

Carey won premierships with North Melbourne in 1996 and 1999.
