A mother has admitted killing her six-month-old baby boy in the family’s Mernda home.

Bao Tram Nguyen, known as Alyssa Nguyen, appeared via videolink in Melbourne Magistrates’ Court on Wednesday where she pleaded guilty to infanticide.

Her plea comes seven months after little Spencer Jordan Recto was found dead by his father, Ben “Beej” Recto, at the Langdon Dr property, on May 20.

Ms Nguyen, 37, was also found in a critical condition in what was a suspected murder-suicide attempt.

Mr Recto called triple-0, but his son could not be revived.

Ms Nguyen was treated at The Alfred hospital, before being charged on June 14.

The circumstances of what happened inside the suburban home that day have not yet been revealed in court.

Court documents say the first-time mum “carried out conduct that caused the death of her child … in circumstances that amount to infanticide”.

Ms Nguyen, who was represented by criminal lawyer Ruth Parker, spoke softly and politely during her court appearance, acknowledging that she could hear and see the magistrate from her remote location.

Asked if she pleaded guilty or not guilty to the single charge of infanticide, she replied: “Guilty, your honour.”

She remains free in the community on strict bail conditions, including that she abide by a health plan, surrender her passport and not leave Australia.

If she wishes to travel interstate, she has to seek permission from the leading detective on her case.

She was ordered to face the Supreme Court next month for an administrative hearing, where dates will be set for a pre-sentencing hearing later in the year.

The tragedy shocked friends and neighbours of the couple, with tributes, including teddy bears and flowers, left outside the home.

“I can’t believe it; they’re a good couple,” one friend told the Herald Sun at the time.

They said Ms Nguyen was a “caring mother” but had found mothering “a bit of a struggle”.

A GoFundMe page set up to help the parents following their son’s death raised more than $20,000.

“Spencer was the light of their lives and was deeply loved by everyone,” the fundraiser said.
