Mongols member Rocco Curra was shot after a brawl at The Sporting Globe bar at Fountain Gate

A Mongols bikie was sprayed with bullets in a revenge attack after a fight broke out at a bar at Fountain Gate shopping centre, a court has heard.

A targeted shooting that nearly claimed the life of a bikie was sparked by a pub brawl involving a rival motorcycle gang, a court has heard.

Mongols member Rocco Curra was sprayed with up to a dozen bullets, four of which struck him in the head and shoulder, while he sat in a car outside a home in Bulleen in Melbourne’s northeast.

He underwent multiple surgeries and spent nearly a month in hospital but survived.

Prosecutors allege the August 2019 shooting was carried out by five members of the Finks motorcycle club in retribution for another shooting three weeks earlier, which was sparked over a fight during a viewing of a State of Origin match.

Two of the men alleged to be involved, Sione Hokafonu and Poiva Sita, were charged with attempted murder and fronted the Supreme Court on Wednesday for the first day of their trial.

During his opening address, prosecutor Neill Hutton said up to eight or nine Finks, including Mr Hokafonu, watched the rugby league match at The Sporting Globe bar at Fountain Gate shopping centre.

Another man was seated at a nearby table wearing a white jumper with the initials “SYLM” on it.

“We understand that stands for ‘Support your local Mongols’,” Mr Hutton said.

Security footage was played to court showing the man throwing a salt shaker at a TV, prompting one of the Finks to confront him.

The man headbutted the bikie, prompting a fight between him and the Finks before he was dragged outside.

A few minutes later the group returned to the bar carrying the man’s jumper, which Mr Hutton likened to a “trophy” as it was a rival club’s jumper.

The court heard after leaving the bar later that night, Mr Hokafonu was shot at 11 times by a Mongols member while waiting at traffic lights, with one round striking his foot.

He was rushed to hospital but was released soon after.

“That ties back into Mr Curra,” Mr Hutton said.

“The victim of the shooting in Bulleen was a member of the Mongols club and he was only targeted by the Finks, on our case, because he was a member.”

Mr Hutton said Mr Curra was “randomly set-up” by someone who knew he was a Mongol.

Security footage was played to court from the night of the shooting, showing a silver BMW pulling up in front of Mr Curra’s car before Mr Hokafonu and another man allegedly stepped out and fired multiple rounds into the windscreen.

The court heard the men fled the scene before torching the stolen BMW.

They were allegedly picked up by a getaway vehicle driven by a third man, Joseph Opapo who is also standing trial on charges of intentionally and recklessly causing serious injury in circumstances of gross violence.

The trio have pleaded not guilty to the charges.

Mr Hutton’s opening address will continue on Thursday.
