A mobile speed camera operator has described the terrifying moment a man wearing a mask from the horror movie Scream thumped on his window and screamed at him to get a “real job” in Melbourne’s west.

The incident is the latest in a spate of attacks which has seen at least four speed camera vehicles and operators targeted since April.

The most recent incident began when a woman approached the red Mitsubishi Outlander speed camera car the man was setting up on Exford Rd in Melton South at 3.20pm in July 5.

The speed camera told police the woman smacked the front passenger window before yelling at the operator to “get a real job”.

She then walked away before returning five minutes later with a sign that read “speed camera”.

The woman remained hanging around the operator’s car for the next hour.

But things then took a scary turn when the operator said he saw a white 4WD ute approach him about 5pm.

He said the driver was wearing a mask from the movie Scream and a female was in the passenger seat.

The speed camera operator told police the driver got out of the car and came up “aggressively” to the front passenger window before he “thumped on it hard”.

He told police: “The male with the mask started screaming at me and told me to get a real job.

“He kept screaming at me and thumping on the car window.”

A passing police car stopped to intervene and eventually arrested a 51-year-old Melton South woman and spoke to a 36-year-old Aintree man.

Both are expected to be charged on summonsed for unlawful assault to appear at a magistrates court at a later date.

Anyone who witnessed the incident or with dashcam footage or information is urged to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 or submit a confidential report online at www.crimestoppersvic.com.au.

The Community and Public Sector Union, which represents speed camera operators, said the abuse and attacks was unacceptable.

“If you harass a road safety camera operator you will get caught,” the union said in a statement.

In June a mobile speed camera car parked in Point Lonsdale on the Bellarine Peninsula had its windows smashed and tyres slashed in an attack police described as “ridiculous high-end criminal behaviour”.

On Anzac Day, a female road safety camera operator was inside her car when it was attacked by a masked man wielding a metal pole in the nearby town of St Leonards.

The following month, another operator was targeted in Tullamarine, with another vehicle stalking him before its occupants jumped out and attacked his car.
