Police have confirmed that the death of a man whose body was found burnt out in a car in Echuca last week was not suspicious.

Officers found the man, 48-year-old Robert Clarke, along Ogilvie Ave about 4.20am in the town along the Victorian-NSW border.

Mr Clarke’s death has been deemed by police as not suspicious.

A Victoria Police spokesperson said the man was in custody last Wednesday after he allegedly provided a positive evidentiary breath test.

The Professional Standards Command will preside over the investigation, a standard practice after someone has died following recent contact with police.

A report is being prepared for the coroner.
