Man, woman dead in horror crash on Nepean Highway at Mentone
A man and woman have died in a crash involving a car and motorcycle on the Nepean Hwy at Mentone in Melbourne’s southeast.
Two people are dead after a horror crash involving a car and motorcycle in Melbourne’s southeast.
The crash, which killed a man and woman and injured two others, happened on the Nepean Hwy near Swanston St at Mentone about 9pm Wednesday.
A man and woman, who were on the motorcycle, were rushed to hospital but the man died.
The male driver of the car and his female passenger were also taken to hospital but the woman could not be saved.
Victoria Police said it was investigating the crash.
A local Mentone car dealership worker on Thursday said accidents were far too common on the stretch of Nepean Highway where the fatality occurred.
Fred Kirschner, who has worked at James Michael of Mentone on Nepean Highway for 15 years, said “near misses” happened weekly.
“That’s the first fatal we’ve had here, but every week there’s an accident of some sort of description,” he said.
“Sometimes people come out of the BP here and they see no cars but by the time they come out they get hit to the side.”
Mr Kirshner said he has raised concerns with VicRoads about the dangerous strip, but to no avail.
“VicRoads have turned a blind eye to it,” he said.
“They said they should know what they’re doing they’ve got a licence, we’re not here to police them.
“I said you should be putting another sign up so nothing happens.
“I personally have probably seen about 20 collisions in my time here over 10 years, but they’re never fatal.
“A couple of motorbike ones where they get T-boned and the guy comes over the handle bars.
“A lot of times people use (Nepean Highway) as a drag strip, the police are never around.”
There have been 261 lives lost on the state’s roads this year, slightly down from the 266 lost at the same time last year.
Anyone who witnessed the collision, with CCTV/dashcam or other footage or information is urged to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 or at www.crimestoppersvic.com.au.
