Police were on Tuesday night still hunting the driver of the truck after a fatal hit-run in Truganina.
Emergency services were called to the Western Freeway about 11.30pm on Monday after a man was found dead.
The 23-year-old man had pulled his white Range Rover over on the busy freeway after being involved in a collision.
He was then hit by a truck and killed.
Police said they believe the Thornhill Park man had been driving along the freeway when he collided into the wire rope barriers.
He then pulled over and as he stepped out of his car, it’s believed he was fatally hit by a passing truck who failed to stop, police said.
Major Crash Investigation Unit detectives narrowed their focus onto two trucks, who were both travelling in the area at the time of the crash.
Officers say one of those drivers witnessed the collision, who told investigators the driver of the Range Rover had been driving erratically just moments prior to veering into the barrier.
That man’s truck was located in South Australia and the driver is currently assisting both South Australia Police and Victoria Police.
The latest death brings Victoria’s road toll to 283 — 51 more lives lost than at the same time last year.
