Homicide squad detectives will work to determine whether the man peppered with bullets in a violent street shooting in Melbourne’s north had any links to organised crime.
The 60-year-old Craigieburn man was killed during the late-night ambush on a naturestrip outside a Gentles Ave home in Campbellfield about 10.10pm on Friday.
The victim, whose identity was unknown on Saturday night, was rushed to hospital with critical gunshot wounds but died a short time later.
CCTV from a neighbour’s home caught the sound of up to 15 shots being fired in the street before it caught a sedan speeding away.
A burnt out car dumped on Northbourne Rd in that suburb about 11pm Friday was being probed by forensic and homicide detectives on Saturday.
Detectives were on Saturday working to determine if that was potentially used as a getaway vehicle for the alleged shooter or shooters.
Police could not say whether the deceased man was known to police but there are rumblings in Melbourne’s underworld that the hit may cause retaliation attacks.
One gangland source said the man was the subject of a huge murder contract.
“Lot’s going to pop off from this one. A lot of angry boys around today,” the underworld source told the Sunday Herald Sun.
Detectives believe the shooting was a targeted attack and the parties were known to each other.
A 20-year-old Yarraville man and a Westmeadows man, 22, on Saturday night remained in hospital under police guard.
They caught the eye of police after they were dropped to a hospital with unknown injuries.
It is not known if they suffered gunshot wounds or burns to their bodies and will likely be interviewed in the coming days.
They will likely hold crucial information into the Craigieburn man’s assassination.
Forensic crews also seized a rifle left jammed under a vehicle in the hours after the man’s killing.
It is not known whether that was the weapon used to kill the Craigieburn man or if there are other firearms at play.
That gun will be put through ballistics checks to find out how many shots were fired and if it had been used in any other crimes across the city.
Members from the VIPER Task force, who work to dismantle organised crime in Victoria, were seen quizzing neighbouring homes on Saturday.
They will be assessing the deceased man’s current and prior associates and any disputes or disagreements he may have had with others.
Victoria Police Acting Superintendent Kelly Walker said there was not yet a clear motive to the man’s execution.
She said investigators would keep an open mind in the complex murder investigation.
“Homicide squad will canvas all avenues available to them, extensive CCTV in the area, we’ve got the vehicles and obviously witnesses,” she said.
“We want to provide the reassurance that we believe that (it was) targeted and provide the community the reassurance that we are exhausting all investigative avenues.”
