A man has handed himself in to police over an alleged fatal shooting in Taylors Hill.
Homicide squad detectives were called to investigate after a man was found critically injured inside a BMW on Vaucluse Boulevard at 11.30pm on Sunday.
A 42-year-old man is helping police with their inquiries into the death of a Craigieburn man after he attended the Melbourne’s CBD Victoria Police complex at 9am on Tuesday, May 9.
The 31-year-old victim was formally identified through fingerprint on Tuesday.
“Detectives received a significant amount of information overnight and are confident as to the identities of the other two men who were present at the scene of the incident,” a Victoria Police spokeswoman said.
Investigators believe an allegedly recently stolen BMW pursued a white Mitsubishi sedan through Taylors Hill prior to the alleged shooting.
The Mitsubishi crashed into bollards blocking vehicle access between Grange Terrace and Johnston Way, prompting one occupant to allegedly confront the two men in the BMW.
A single shot was allegedly fired into the car, which struck the male passenger in the upper body.
The BMW driver called Triple-0 before he fled the scene, but paramedics were unable to save the passenger.
The other two men also fled the scene, with one door knocking residents to ask for directions on how to escape the estate.
Detective Acting Inspector Nigel L’Estrange, of the Victoria Police homicide squad, said the parties were known to one another.
“This is not a random attack, we don’t believe there is further risk to the community,” Insp L’Estrange said.
One St Kilda Parade resident said she heard two cars speeding past her house about 11.30pm.
“It’s really scary because my son arrived home at around the same time last night,” she said.
“I heard the cars zooming past but didn’t think it’d come to this.”
The investigation is ongoing.
