The man accused of murdering another man during a fight in Bentleigh East – which also left a woman in hospital with life threatening injuries – has had his identity suppressed.

The 20-year-old Bentleigh East man fronted Melbourne Magistrates’ Court on Sunday where his lawyer and the prosecution successfully applied for his name to be banned from being made public.

The two victims, a deceased man and a woman fighting for life, also cannot be named.

Prosecution argued the gag order was to protect the safety of the woman and avoid “undue distress and embarrassment” to her.

The court heard the woman, who remains in hospital, has not yet spoken to police due to the extent of her injuries.

The prosecution requested 12 weeks to serve their brief of evidence to review post mortem reports, forensics of mobile phones and transcripts of triple-0 calls.

The man, flanked by custody officers in the dock, did not say anything throughout the hearing.

The court heard it was his first time in custody and he was “vulnerable” due to his age and appearance.

He will return to court for a committal mention on November 25.

It comes after emergency services responded to reports of a fight about 8pm, where a man was found with critical injuries after being stabbed.

He died at the scene.

Police believe the three involved are known to each other, however are yet to determine the exact circumstances surrounding the incident.

Mother of two Shelley, 44, said her family had been watching horror movie Gremlins when the police arrived just a few doors down from her.

“We were tucked up on the couch watching Gremlins when we heard a commotion outside and the police cordoning off our normally sleepily quiet family street around 9pm on Saturday night,” she said.

“We are shocked something this violent could happen just a few houses away from our family home.

“My nine year old boy keeps asking if someone was stabbed and murdered on our street.”

Bentleigh East local Jackson, who lives around the corner from the address, said he and his wife heard police sirens blaring.

“We heard the sirens last night while we were watching a movie but we kind of thought nothing of it,” he said.

“Usually when you hear sirens they sort of come and go but these ones just stopped all of a sudden so we went back to watching the movie.

“Then this morning we saw the house on TV … and found out that a man had been (killed).

“It’s unnerving for sure, it’s way too close to home to have something like this happen.

“We’ve been here for a few years now and it’s such a nice area with lots of families, so it’s definitely scary.”

Part of the road remained cordoned off with police tape on Sunday morning, as police were seen taking photographs and collecting evidence as they continue their investigations.

Anyone who witnessed the incident or has any information is urged to contact Crime Stoppers at 1800 333 000.
