A man has died in police custody after crashing a car into a fence in Melbourne’s northern suburbs on Sunday.
Police were called to Murphy St in Preston about 4am following reports a car had crashed through a fence and into a front yard, near Newlands Primary School.
Upon arrival, police observed the man inside the vehicle behaving erratically before he emerged from the vehicle, confronting police.
Police tried to restrain the man before he collapsed.
Attending officers called for medical assistance and performed CPR, but the man died at the scene.
Detectives from the Homicide Squad will investigate the incident with oversight from Professional Standards Command, as per standard practice when a person dies in police custody.
