Man targeted at Melbourne CBD cafe

A Melbourne Central business owner has hit out at the rise of violence in the CBD after a man was bashed by a group of thugs inside his popular cafe.

It’s understood the man was chased by about 10 people down La Trobe St on Saturday night when he was kicked and pushed outside of Homm Dessert.

The man ran inside the cafe for help but the group followed, punching him while shoving him into a glass door about 9pm.

Shocking video footage posted to social media captured customers and staff trying to break up the fight.

Homm Dessert owner Bass Sakdatorn said he was at home when the violence erupted.

“What I know from one of my team members is that there were about seven to 10 people just jumping one guy outside,” he said on Instagram.

“He ran into the shop to seek safety and he was kicked and pushed into the glass door so hard that the glass door chipped.

“They were throwing things as well … they started bashing him up … they continued to bash that one guy up for about a minute.”

Mr Sakdatorn said the thugs ran away before the police arrived.

He said no staff or customers were injured during the brawl.

“This is why we can’t have nice things in Melbourne anymore,” Mr Sakdatorn said.

“I feel like no one deserves to actually see violence that close.

“Seeing a person getting jumped one to two metres away is actually pretty bad.”

Mr Sakdatorn said Melbourne was gaining a reputation of being one of the “most dangerous” cities in the country.

“As a person who lives in Melbourne, that hurts me,” he said.

“If this happened to a small business that just started … the owner would have to spend more money trying to fix the place. What did they do to deserve that?

“Australia used to be one of the safest places … I don’t know how we got to this.”

It comes as traders are refusing to work after dark on nearby Elizabeth St due to concerns for their safety amid an alarming spike in the number of crimes reported in the busy precinct.

New Crime Statistics Agency data, obtained by the Herald Sun, showed the total number of offences – including assault, criminal damage and theft – recorded on Elizabeth St increased by 50 per cent over the past five years.

Victoria Police was contacted for comment.
