THE family of a boy who was killed years ago at an intersection nearby another crossing where a little girl was fatally struck by a car in Hoppers Crossing on Sunday say it’s devastating another life has been lost in the area.

Police are investigating after the four-year-old girl was killed at the corner of Derrimut and Heaths roads about 9.15pm. The corner involves about 25 lanes of traffic and has zebra crossings and pedestrian lights at every turn, one local described the intersection as “treacherous”.

The crash occurred close to where 10-year-old Jack Tubbs was killed in 2002. That incident occurred at Hogans Rd and Derrimut Rd roundabout where he was struck by a tow truck. His death led to the addition of pedestrian crossing.

Jack Tubbs was just 10 years old when he was fatally struck in Hoppers Crossing.

Speaking yesterday, Jack’s father, Steve, said he was devastated another child had died on the same road.

“Our heart goes out to (the girl’s family), we’ve been turned inside out because of it,” he said.

“Even though time passes, the pain doesn’t stop. You probably can’t even understand how I felt. I don’t know what to say, that’s just terrible.”

A resident who lives around the corner said the intersection where the girl was killed was a constant concern for locals.

“I’ve been screaming out about this intersection for years; I’ve just been waiting for this to happen,” she said.

“There have been so many near misses in this area and now a poor four-year-old child has been killed.

“My husband and I fought tooth and nail to even get pedestrian crossings here, but people speed through red lights all the time.”

The plaza near the crossing is a “magnet for kids”, with a cinema, shops, restaurants and a TimeZone game centre – a popular after-school hangout spot for students from local schools.

“The majority of the people using this intersection are kids, so it’s our children paying for dangerous and reckless driving,” the resident said.

“If you use these lights, you can’t cross just because the lights go green, you need to stop and do a full check because guaranteed there will be someone speeding through.”

The City of Wyndham has only two speeding cameras, which some locals believe is not deterring fast drivers.

The driver of the vehicle, a 20-year-old Werribee man, stopped at the scene.

Wyndham City Council did not respond.
