A teenage lifeguard was violently assaulted while on duty at Casey ARC Aquatic and Recreation Centre in Melbourne’s southeast.
The 19-year-old was allegedly approached and attacked by a group of youths while overseeing swimmers using the Narre Warren swimming pool just before 6pm Sunday.
He suffered minor injuries to his upper body and was taken to Dandenong Hospital in a stable condition.
The offenders fled the scene and were last spotted heading along Overland Dr – only meters from the aquatic centre.
The assault followed a recent post to the Casey ARC Facebook page reminding visitors to “treat staff and fellow swimmers with respect.”
On Monday, one user suggested that security at the centre needed to be increased after the attack, while other community members expressed concerns about staff safety.
City of Casey Mayor, Cr Stefan Koomen said in response the Council remained committed to ensuring their facilities are safe for everyone in the community.
“We are taking immediate steps to increase security at all our aquatic centres to ensure a safe environment for everyone,” he said.
“The City of Casey, in partnership with Aligned Leisure, is providing support to the lifeguard and all staff involved.”
Life Saving Victoria said in a statement: “We remain committed to working closely with aquatic venues to ensure adherence to procedures and compliance standards, prioritising the safety of both staff and patrons at all times”.
Police are investigating the incident and urge anyone with information to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
