Victoria’s legal regulator has issued a rare plea for information from the public regarding Melbourne lawyers Pat and Jane Lennon following a News Corp investigation into the couple.

Legal Services Commissioner Fiona McLeay issued the appeal and confirmed she is investigating the pair after News Corp this week approached her office with fresh questions about the activities of Mr Lennon, who has represented high profile clients including underworld figure Mick Gatto and former jockey Danny Nikolic, and Mrs Lennon, who runs high-interest loans company Argyle Lending.

Strict laws normally stop Ms McLeay from speaking publicly about her investigations but she is allowed to do so if disclosure is required to do her job or if it is “reasonably required to enable the enforcement or investigation of the criminal law or a disciplinary matter”.

It comes after News Corp last month published details of criticisms of the behaviour of the Lennons made by judges and as we today reveal serious allegations made against Mr Lennon in a court proceeding, as well as fresh drug driving charges laid against the lawyer by highway police.

Mr Lennon is also fighting bankruptcy proceedings brought by barristers who claim to be owed $54,000 in unpaid fees.

“We are aware of the matters raised regarding Patrick and Jane Lennon and we are investigating their conduct,” Ms McLeay’s spokesman told News Corp.

“We urge anyone with information about their conduct to contact us directly on 03 9679 8001 or investigations@lsbc.vic.gov.au. This includes lawyers and clients.

“Unfortunately, we can’t comment further while our investigations are underway as this may jeopardise our investigations.”

Both Mr and Mrs Lennon hold current practising certificates, enabling them to continue acting as solicitors.
